Theatre Passe Muraille

Artscape, the City of Toronto and Theatre Passe Muraille partnered in 2007 to preserve this beloved venue that has been so pivotal in the development of Canadian Theatre.

In 2007, Toronto’s historic Theatre Passe Muraille was threatened with shutting down its operations while dealing with a crippling debt load. In an effort to save the theatre company and the heritage theatre venue, the City purchased the building from Theatre Passe Muraille, with Artscape leasing the building at $1 per year and managing the ongoing capital requirements. Artscape leased the facility back to Theatre Passe Muraille at $1 per year plus operating expenses so the theatre company could continue to manage the day-to-day operations. Artscape’s excellent reputation as a developer and project manager allowed the City to feel comfortable that the building would be appropriately managed in the future.

Today, Theatre Passe Muraille continues to develop and produce innovative and provocative Canadian Theatre, and nurture new and established artists and companies. http://www.passemuraille.on.ca/
